The closest of friends find each other in the corridors of college. True friendships are made while sharing dabbas, swapping childhood memories and falling in love for the first time. Amidst pages of history, dreams are dreamt. Of success, love and most importantly, lifelong friendships.
Popcorn Khao! Mast Ho Jao! is about three friends. The eternal dreamer Rahul, the ever consistent Tania and the crazy, crazy Goldie. And then of course there is Sonia. Sonia of the luscious lips, the long curly hair, the honey coloured eyes… the stuff that every boy’s dreams are made of… and Rahul is no different boy! The film starts in college and travels with four characters as they set off thereafter to achieve their own individual goals and realize their dreams. And fall in love.
Popcorn Khao! Mast Ho Jao! is a warm comedy with moments of tender romance. It’s about love, laughter, loneliness and everything that makes up the wonder years of life.
This is my first film, true. But I knew exactly what I wanted to make. Popcorn was always, in my head, a film that everyone would love to watch. Sans pretension. Sans boredom. Of course it had to use the grammar of popular cinema, for that is what the PNC banner is all about– popular, entertaining, memorable movies. What I added to that was that special quality every first time film maker brings to his craft– innocence.
You will laugh with me, you will cry, you will remember with fondness the first time you ever fell in love–and, oh yes, you will reach out in the dark for that ubiquitous packet of popcorn… believe me, I had exactly as much fun making the film as you will have watching it!

Friendship, love, self discovery. Popcorn is actually a stunningly simple film and that is what makes it so special. When Kabir narrated the idea to me, it took him less than ten minutes. I said yes in under one. We deliberately chose actors without baggage.
Akshay, who I chanced upon on the streets of New York—without doubt this year’s most exciting discovery. Tanishaa, with or without the extra ‘a’, an amazing actor whose real potential is revealed for the first time. And, of course, the queen of sizzle, Rashmi who can set the arctic circle on fire, right in the midst of the darkest winter.
Watch them come together in this warm, intimate and truly enchanting film about how magical real relationships can be. Popcorn defies the myth that films with newcomers are always small. This is as big as it gets! All you need to do is open your heart to it—and it will take you places you have never even dreamt of!
