Pritish Nandy Communications announces that it has started work on making Shakti Samanta’s famous action thriller Howrah Bridge, starring legendary actors Ashok Kumar and Madhubala, and featuring two of the most successful songs in Hindi film history, composed by O P Nayyar. The original film, shot in black and white in 1958, is a cult classic and also starred Helen in her most famous cabaret number, K N Singh, Om Prakash, Madan Puri, Mehmood and Minoo Mumtaz.
The film is being made by PNC as a tribute to the genius of Shakti Samanta, one of Bollywood’s legendary film makers, and the animation work will be done by Florida-based Motion Pixel Corporation, who are already partnering PNC on five animation film projects.
Following Howrah Bridge, PNC has also acquired the rights to make animation versions of two other Shakti Samanta films: Amar Prem, starring Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore, and Barsaat Ki Ek Raat, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Raakhee. “This is our way of reviving some of the grand old classics of Indian cinema and introducing them to the new generation of movie goers”, says Pritish Nandy, Chairman, PNC.”
Manny Bains, Chairman, Motion Pixel Corporation, says: “It is a rare opportunity to remake a cult classic like Howrah Bridge and we are delighted to work with PNC on the film and bring it alive for today’s generation. As it is, everyone knows the movie’s hit songs by heart. Now they will be able to see the film in a bigger, more exciting, modern format, in full colour. This is going to be the first of our classic Bollywood series.”
