Jhankaar Beats wins big at Worldfest Houston 2004

Pritish Nandy Communications’ path-breaking “slice of life” movie Jhankaar Beats, which launched the hugely successful multiplex movie genre, has won the Special Jury Award for the Best Film at the Houston International Film Festival last week—better known as Worldfest Houston. Founded in 1961, Worldfest Houston is one of the oldest and most prestigious film festivals in the US and discovered Spielberg, Lucas, Lynch, Ridley Scott, the Coen Brothers, Robert Rodrigues, Ang Lee and several other legendary directors.

The Special Jury Award at Worldfest is one of the most prestigious awards at the festival and means that the jury liked the Jhankaar Beats so much that the film was considered as the best of all features in the category chosen. “We are extremely proud to receive the award”, said Pritish Nandy, Chairman of PNC, “for it reaffirms our commitment to the new kind of cinema that is changing Bollywood and making it a global force to reckon with.” Jhankaar Beats was directed by debutante director Sujoy Ghosh and starred Juhi Chawla, Sanjay Suri, Rinke Khanna, Rahul Bose, Shayan Munshi and Riya Sen. Its music by Vishal Shekhar broke all records and stayed on the charts for almost two years.
